The discourse community that I am writing about for unit one essay is the political science and political punditry discourse community. Right-wing is a common phrase used in political science discourses and political punditry. Like many others who have encountered the phrase, I was somewhat first confused the first time I read about it in an article on democratic governance. I struggled to understand its meaning, particularly from the context of politics. The use of the phrase created the “us versus them” impression where right-wing and left-wing were to sharply be opposing sides.
