Tylor Branson’s article about  “ FIRST-YEAR COMPOSITION PREPARES STUNEDTS FOR ACADEMIC WRINTING” was my choice to think about why this is a bad idea. when I enrolled in to college I was told that composition writing was mandatory for everyone in the first year of college. I was quite surprised in the beginning, because my major was vastly different that writing a composition. I followed all the instructions and started to write a composition. I strongly agree that is crucial to know how to write and read on academic level, but I don’t agree that one year can make a student professional writer to write research papers on high level. In many case if student is lucking accurate spelling and grammar rules, they are prone to make tones of mistakes. The author himself believes that first year is not enough to prepare students for academic writing. It should start in the high school. I don’t know what kind system of learning is in the high school in the U.S.A., but I believe the students should start to write correctly before starting a college, which can prepare them for next step in the education. College bombards students with different academic subjects. Therefore, every student should be prepared to handle numerous assignments, which they will be facing from every subject.  Spelling and grammar issues are lingering with me. I still struggle with this, because English is not my mother tongue.  academic vocabulary   is important to be a good writer and truly understand the subjects. In conclusion to write efficiently requires more than one year of training to learn how to write on academic level. I believe that brain storming is vital to writing composition, otherwise nobody will able to write a sentence. Majority of students if they were trained in the high-school how to write compositions on scholar level, they would be more successful in college.  Academic writing requires academic vocabulary and it is not a basic general writing.

Khatuna, I totally agree that English Composition totally prepares college students especially ENL/ESL students for the future especially when English is not the first language spoken at home. How can a freshman be prepared for courses like, sociology, government, or philosophy which requires major writing skills if students have no writing foundations. Let along handle numerous assignments or deal with the stress of writing in different formats. I do agree that these courses can be taught college classes to students who excelled throughout High School.

Hello Khatuna, I agree that just by taking a year of English composition doesn’t mean you could become a better writer, it takes time and a lot of practice. Something interesting you brought up was your mother tongue, I also struggled with English and It’s not my favorite subject but I do my best, when I took my SAT exam I was having so much trouble with the grammar section, I never did well no matter how many times I practiced I couldn’t get the passing score. I seemed great in other subjects such as math, science, social studies, but English was just a subject I couldn’t do so well on.

Hello Afiea, I can relate myself to you. I am convinced that writing skill is also important tool to be a good writer. I am taking teas test and my weak part is English. I heard the stories that science is the hardest, but I find it much easier than English comprehension and grammar. Language knowledge is pattern of repetition and writing improves when one has academic vocabulary and as a result ability of writing increases.
