Week 10: The Digital Reader

  1. How Litt describes the relationship between literature, writing, and technology as allies. At that point it makes me reflect on this world where everything is moving forward and changing literature, writing depends on the use of technology. For example, we read, type (write) our assignments, and send or post our responses using technology because another method will be more complicated. So they are a good match team to work together.
  2. I remember when I was in high school (18 years ago) I read Don Quijote de la Mancha, Prometeo encadenado, La Odisea, etc. Reading those books arose my imagination and I remember with classmates having conversations about them. Now, in my first year in college of course after almost two decades passed, things are really different. Technology is a good resource if you know how to use it, but not depends on that. For example, when people are texting and they used different abbreviations to “communicated” if you ask them how you spelled a word, even though they are in high school sometimes they need to go to Siri, Alexa, or Google to find out. Instead of using a dictionary, it effortless to type in the translation. I agree when the author stated, “I think writers will continue to occur but technology and its trivia will cause us to lose something, just as we lost something when we lost the classical education”.
  3. The advances in technology are beneficial, especially in this time of pandemic that forced us to move online. Where we have access to so much information. However, in some cases is also making people lazy. Why do you have to work hard if you can have answers to any question as easier as clicked? Children and adults are now spending more time on screen,  playing, or on social media. The technology they are lazier to read a book, a novel, or a tale story. I have three children and one of my rules is after 7 pm there is no more screen time. My little boy how is eleven years old, he complaining that he is bored “take a book and read” that is my answer. My kids are not happy with that specific rule, but it is my duty as a mother to help them not be dominated by electronics, they need to set time to do different things or activities to develop as a normal human being.  As  Litt mentioned, “Similarly, I find it difficult to understand why any eleven-year-old of today would be sufficiently bored to turn inward for entertainment.”
  4. To be honest, I don’t like being on the screen reading articles or lectures for school. I miss reading a book, a booklet, and taking notes over the paper. It is something that helps me to learn and understand the material and to connect with the world. Reading the monitor, cellphone, or another device frustrated me because I feel like I am missing the full concept and I am not retaining the information for a longer period, like stay there in my short-term memory but it does the information does not stay or go to store in my long-term memory, which frustrated me, therefore I have to read and re-read with makes to spend more time on the device.

Digital reader

Litt says that literature isn’t alien to technology and that literature depends on technology. the internet offers us temptations that other writers in the past did not have. Writers will continue to occur but as technology advances it will cause us to loose something just like how we lost something when we lost classical education. The advancement of technology has also led to the deterioration of literature.

Many people have been affected by technology. People nowadays do not read classical novels or other classical stories which has a part in why our vocabulary and literature is declining. People these days are more interested in comics, games, movies, videos from youtube, social media and many more. As technology advances people are becoming more lazy and just use the internet to try and solve the problems instead of actually trying. I think technology has affected my perceptions of more classical literature because even if i read some books today its different than the literature from the past. The types of stories that are driven by today is sci-fi, horror, fiction, supernatural etc.  There are also many comic books and books based on tv shows.

Technology is disrupting the stories of today or the future because we are only focused on our technology like phone, laptop, TV, Ipad, game consoles etc. People are more focused on entertainment or the amount of followers they have on their social media platform or the amounts of likes they have. People are so focused on how to get famous in these platforms or what to watch etc that we are not even thinking about Classic literature, Before when technology wasn’t as advance people turn to  books and literature as entertainment but if you ask kids and adults what they do for fun they will talk about technologies such as tv iPhone or games. This makes us not want to turn to books because it gets boring compared to all the technologies we have today. And if this continues in the future with even better technologies books may cease to exist. Like how many authors or directors talk about dystopic future.

Reading on a screen or through these various interfaces affects me in a negative way for me. In my opinion reading things online makes me more distracted with all the various ads around the website or page making me unable to focus on whats actually important. I like to read from books and pages because it feels more comfortable and i feel like i can understand it more while annotating, highlighting and writing notes i can do that on the ipad too but it just doesnt feel the same way.

The Digital Reader

How does Litt describe the relationship between literature, writing, and technology?

Litt uses his own personal experience as a way to describe how interconnected technology is with writing. For example, when he didn’t have the same technology offered today, his immediate inclination was to go outside, or when inside, delve into writing for recreational and private purposes. Quite similarly, I began to write poetry when I was bored and felt like expressing myself in a more personal and private way. Then, I grew attached to poetry, as it became a pastime I did more often than not.

Litt discusses how many classical tales were driven by distance, or lack of connectivity, rendering these plotlines obsolete in the digital age. Has technology affected your perceptions of more classical literature? What do types of issues are the stories of today driven by?

I think technology has indeed changed my perceptions of classical literature in both good and bad ways. For example, although I read Shakespearean plays in school, the videos and other resources provided to me from technology at my hands, allowed me to understand the structure and poetry that Shakespeare utilized. In another sense, I read classical literature when I was in elementary school, and although my vocabulary was not at the level, I did enjoy those books. However, now I think I’d prefer to watch an adaptation as a pastime, although I recognize that these are never as good as the book.

How might you see technology disrupting/change the stories of today or the future? (Consider how might tropes might change as technology advances, or how it has already)

The stories have already begun to change. I’ve read Emily Dickinson’s poems, and many of their themes are beautiful or on the other hand sorrowful, but I can’t always relate to her poems. Her surroundings were definitely more different than today. Poetry today still references themes that are common to us as humans: death, love, mourning- such themes, however, are developed in different manners. The author may have had more of an opportunity to travel and interact with more cultures, seeing as technology has advanced so much. Stories go from being “single-stories” to more open-minded works of art.

What is your opinion? How does reading on a screen or through these various interfaces affect you/your learning/reading comprehension?

I feel more detached to the story, in a sense. Reading an e-book in my leisure time feels unnatural. I’d much rather grab a book, and flip through it’s pages. When I read on a screen, my mind has learned to associate it as a task for school or something else. I read every day, in spanish or english. However, I don’t feel like my comprehension increases or decreases due to the fact that I’m reading from a screen. I do find myself skimming a lot more, and I think that the words I read per minute have decreased, although this is just my personal perception.

Week 10

  1. Technology is a big aspect of every individual today, technology is being used to make things easier and faster. Most technological inventions used today can help us find so much information within a few seconds, it’s a great invention. On the other hand, Litt describes the relationship between literature, writing, and technology to be a loss of touch. What I mean is that today, most people have no interest in literature because of how advanced technology has led today. They are busy playing on switches, computers, iPhones, tablets, etc, these are what keeps them entertained and are always keeping in touch with. However, Litt stated, “literature isn’t alien to technology, literature is technological, to begin with”, what he means by this is that literature depends on technology, also technology changes and influences literature in many different ways.
  2. I believe that technology affected my perceptions of more classical literature because due to technological advancement has opened a whole new world of materials and different types of literature. Before technology people had to find information through reading books, everytime I think about classical literature I think about wartime and writers who were truly able to express their feelings or different perspectives of the world. In high school I was reading classic literature, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the only issue is that I had a hard time understanding some things because of how It is phrased but after re-reading the pages over and over again, I enjoyed the book.
  3. Technology is disrupting the stories of today because we have so many advanced technological inventions, we are always on our phones, playing games and we are so occupied with these technologies, it’s affecting us by moving us away from truly getting a taste of classic literature or even ever holding a book to read.
  4. In my opinion, reading on a screen or through these various interfaces affect my learning/reading comprehension because I focus more when I am reading on paper, I can jot down notes, highlight and I feel that I perform better comprehension rather than just reading on a screen. I am the type of person who is hands-on, I prefer to use my hand to write instead of typing. In most of my class, I have to read articles and analyze, but it’s been difficult for me now since I am staring at the screen all day, which is not healthy at all, so printing out my reading or slides helps me concentrate better on my assignments.

Week 10: The Digital Reader (Yailene Rodriguez)

Litt describes the relationship between literature, writing, and technology to be connected all together, one goes hand and hand with another. Technology is dependent on literature because the world needs new things and discoveries in order to be able to continue to write. Although technology did help writers at first be able to have new things to talk about, it is also the reason for the downfall in stories. The internet has become a great distraction and made things much easier than before. Things are able to be seen in a blink of an eye. Videos are created making people want to watch more than reading. The author believes that the future of writing is coming to an end unless more interesting things start happening.
Litt discusses that classical tales aren’t able to exist to be written in this lifetime because there is no long journey with no communication. Long-distance relationships are able to exist and people are able to travel within a few hours not months like in the old age. My perception of classical literature is that there are no more new ones and it’s only from the olden times when husbands went away on long journeys and wrote letters back to their wives. The types of issues are the stories of today driven by things like sci-fi such as aliens and technology that hasn’t been created. It also focuses more on teen relationships like cheating and sneaking out.
I see technology disrupting the stories of today or the future because we are not doing much but being on our phones and laptops and TVs. We can hang out with our friends without even leaving our houses with facetime. People stay inside a lot more now and this pandemic has definitely increased this. I believe that with technology advancing people are going to be able to teleport which would cut all stories about traveling to a designation.
I agree with the point of this author that literature has changed vastly, and that things will never be able to go back like before. Reading on a screen allows me to be able to have the computer read to me which helps me focus better and not lose focus. Reading on a paper book feels more realistic but can make me lose focus fast if the book is hard to understand. Reading on a tablet is in the midground for me it gives me the ability to be able to hear the story read to me and get the feeling that I am actually reading.

The Digital Reader (Deisi Naula)

Toby Litt describes a comparison between literature and technology because, in the beginning, he states that technology will be the cause of writers to lose something in literature as writers have already lost classical education. Also, Litt compares writing conventional novels with technology and he says people are reading about someone playing a computer game which writers are not fascinated by this or even considered to write about. He states that some literature is dependent on technology because we need it for the production of words on the page or words on the screen. Toby Litt discusses how many classical tales were driven by distance the rendered plot lines obsolete in the digital age, personally, I don’t think technology has affected my perception of classical literature. In my opinion, my generation is so used to technology that it’s normal and used on anything and everywhere. However, I do understand that it’s difficult for many people to understand classical literature because you would often compare it to literature from today which is different. The issues that are described in the stories today have to do with mostly science involving technology. In my opinion, technology will continue to have a prominent effect In literature especially since it’s advancing every decade. Many people, society, will be more intrigued in learning and reading about technology. Writers will be more focused on those types of articles, novels, and stories to please the audience. I don’t think that stories will change completely because as Litt stated writers won’t want to write about a person playing a computer game. This will make writers not stop writing literature about other genres. When we play video games or see movies that are science-fictional, we have a visual of what the future could look like and if it does end up looking like such, the media, music, and film will drastically change due to technological advancements. Since the pandemic, many individuals are stuck behind a screen whether it be for work or academic purposes. Reading from the screen is challenging for me because I get distracted with the detailing of how the writing looks. I prefer reading from books to annotate and physically having a paper in front of me. Looking at a screen for hours trying to analyze literature isn’t the same. However, it’s mandatory because some of my classes will include assignments in which we have to read articles. Reading off of a computer, iPad or phone, can be damaging to the eyes if stared at too long but physical paper books can also be damaging but to the planet.

Week 10

Litt describes literature, writing and technology’s relationship as being ongoing and changing as technology is continuing to advance. Writing and literature themselves are technology, a vehicle for expressing emotions, stories, and opinions. The author also believes that technology is affecting the ways that literature is consumed as well as the way that technology influences the style of  writing. Technology and social media is creating a culture of instantaneous information and constant connectedness making the information more brief and less rememberable.
Litt discusses how we no longer have the distance and lack of connectivity to act as plot lines for stories because we are all so constantly connected. Technology affects the way that we are able to perceive more classical literature because the time period feels so far away from the current time and out of touch. Imagining a time without modern day electricity and plumbing seems like an impossible feat when we are able to take classes without ever meeting. In the digital age stories are driven by the possibility of that connectedness ending or the technology taking over. Stories are also driven by the current events that are constantly being updated.  I believe that technology has already begun changing the way that stories are being written and distributed. Many people do not purchase newspapers daily, but they do receive news through media like social media or the television news. Physical copies of newspapers and magazines have become obsolete because they offer online subscriptions. I also believe that writing and literature will become less in a book format and more of an audio or visual formatting.  Many people do not have the attention span to read a book because they are being constantly stimulated from other, more compelling media. Instead of reading a book about a part of history that you are interested in, you can now find a podcast to listen to about that specific time period. The content on the internet has gotten so vast that literature is not the only form of literature that people are focused on.
In my opinion reading on the computer screen is harder and has a negative affect on my ability to comprehend. I find it easier to get distracted and I often find myself skimming the contents when it is on a screen. If I do not understand or remember I  have to reread the contents to understand.  I often print out the articles and assignments because I find it easier to reference, annotate, and comprehend. Reading on my phone is different because it is something that I do often.

A Technological Revolution

It is a known fact that technology has invaded our social, academic and work life. Computers have taken the place of a teacher, book, processing, and thinking skills. Children are no longer reading and their writing skills are basic and minimal. We are seeing children writing less an less, or a well written piece of writing, many are not even writing an essay and when they get to college their writing skills and reading comprehension is that of a 5th grader. For example Litt explains that “Readers more accustomed to screens-web page; iPhone displays-will scan a page of text for its contents, rather than experience it in a gradual linear top-left to bottom-right way.”  The scanning effect will have a bad effect on sentence structure and proper grammar usage. Litt explain that they will not be equipped with proper grammar usage or even worse they will not be able to comprehend a book written by Henry James.  Most of these classic novels as Litt explains “are gradually ceasing to exist.”  Reading and writing as we know it has gone into exile by the technological evolution. The big question is wheather or not technology has really and truly put the novel into exile where people are no longer reading instead they are entertained by technology. Sitting in a coffee shop reading a novel has become a thing of the past, instead people are in front of a computer relying on a youtube video to explain or listening to an audiobook. Technology is hurting our society where many will not be able to read or write properly. Instead of moving forward with technology it almost feels as if we are not gaining the necessary skills to read or write properly.

Technology has effected many people of the technological revolution because many are no longer reading classical novels that enhance our vocabulary and comprehension skills we are just looking for answers on the internet. Many people I know turn to Mr. Google know to get answers to their comprehension questions, while others are in front of a screen all day playing video games. This has a major effect on society as a whole because we are no linger reading for comprehension or developing critical thinking skills that are extremely important.

This new technological error that has us learning behind a computer is by far the worst freshmen college experience ever. I prefer learning and sitting in a classroom, socially interacting, and learning from a Professor in a lecture hall. Although COVID has a positive effect on the advancement of  technology, I feel that this on line classroom was getting ready to explode internationally. If ever I am asked in the future about the effects of technology and online learning;  my response would definitely be how society became robots  and how we lost our thinking process and writing skills . I agree with Litt when he states that “In the future, all novels will invoke a kind of operative irony; post-whatever-comes-after-what-comes-after-Twitter.”  I thank my H.S. teachers who had us study Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet where we learned the content and the writing skills.  I see many younger students looking up answers instead of using their critical thing. I’m upset with the technological revolution because we as a society will definitely have nostalgia. As Litt stated, “Literature can accommodate nostalgia, but only as a houseguest; if nostalgia becomes the landlord, architect and psychoanalyst, literature will have to evict itself.”  That is serious in the educational process.
