Machines and Learning

  1. Carr addressing how as time progresses, our reliance on technology becomes stronger and stronger. For example, the tragic incidents of the plane crashes mentioned in the article. Do you agree? What could have changed the outcome of these incidents/How can we fix this?

I agree that our reliance on technology becomes stronger as technology becomes more advanced. For example, have you ever had that moment where you go back home because you left your phone? It’s like we can’t go anywhere without our cellphones, which makes sense, since the cities and societies we live in are partly built around technological advancements. This is a convenience, sometimes. The plane crash incidents that occurred, however, were inconvenienced or even caused by technology. Such events may probably be fixed by reducing our dependence gradually. For example, providing more training non reliant on technology, but muscle memory instead, o fall back on when technology fails.

  1. Do you think it’s a matter of improving technology or improving the skills of the workers? Why?

The human brain is designed so complexly that scientists do not fully comprehend what we are capable of, so improving the skills of workers will allow for better performance. Anyway, technology can be improved simultaneously.

  1. Do you think this relates to the concern of technology taking jobs? What is your stance on this controversy?

This concern is definitely related to the concern of technology taking over our jobs, which is valid. Many people have been replaced for “better and more efficient” technology. That is why it is so important to learn skills that will help us in the future, as technology advances so rapidly.

Bonus: How reliant are YOU on technology? Think about your daily routine and how many times you interact with technology.

As of right now, I am very reliant on technology. My college classes and assignments are all online, which has been convenient now during the pandemic. Additionally, I interact with other people virtually, due to distance, commodity, and now this year quarantine. I use alarms and calendars on my phone,  I have language apps and dictionaries and books- all on my phone. I can live without my phone and use other alternatives, but it would be very difficult to achieve as many things as I can do now without the use of technology. Therefore, my daily routine is reliant on technology.

Week 11

I want to start off by saying this article was definitely an interesting read, especially the beginning part about how planes are becoming more and more automated. After I was able to overcome my fear of flying I always felt safe in airplanes. Primarily because of the fact that I probably place too much trust in technology. But I also like to think that the pilots on the plane are trained professionals who at the end of the day want to land safely and make it home to their families. This article was eye opening to the fact that you are not always in control and the more you don’t practice your craft the worse you’ll inevitably become. As I was reading I was quickly reminded how when I did my cross country drive, there were stretches where I would do 80 mph for 300 some odd miles. So I would put on cruise control and for hours at a time my only input for the car would be little corrections on the steering wheel. In some way shape or form, I think we are all guilty in sometimes relying too much on technology.

I think the issue is finding the perfect balance between using technology and having more user input to keep the user still engaged enough to react. Going back to my cross country trip even with the little corrections I had to make for the wheel, I am not confident I was engaged with the drive as well as I should have. I do honestly believe with the advancements of technology we are becoming a safer society. But again with that in mind what can we do to make the user still engaged enough to react in case of an emergency. I take a different stance on the accidents that occurred on those airlines from the article. I do not necessarily believe it was the automation that caused the pilots to deviate from their training and cause the planes to crash. I think sometimes people just react poorly to stressful situations. Fear obscures rational reasoning sometimes. I see a spider and everything I know about life goes out the window and I freeze up and will stand in place until the spider is removed.  I am not sure if anyone saw on the news this week that robot dog that was used during an arrest in NYC.

100% this relates to the concern of technology taking jobs. If you ever watch “How it’s Made” all those factories are pretty much 100% reliant on technology with human workers just being their for quality control. The technology is there for AI to determine quality control too so that is only a matter of time before that is implemented as well and the use of human workers will be not worth the time and money.

Week 11: Machines and Learning

1. I do agree with Carr on the thought that our reliance on technology has become so much stronger than it used to be. I would say our dependency on it has actually become dangerous since there is a major difference between human and artificial intelligence. Even as autopilots, for example, have improved flight safety over the years, many aviation and automation experts have concluded that the overuse of automation erodes pilots’ expertise and dulls their reflexes.  “Automation has become so sophisticated,” Carr states, “what pilots spend a lot of time doing is monitoring screens and keying in data.  They’ve become, it’s not much of an exaggeration to say, computer operators.”  There would have been a different outcome if we hadn’t put so much trust into technology. Technology has had a great impact on our lives but it should not take away from our knowledge and ability to do things on our own. Fixing this issue we are having really involves taking a look into one’s trust with artificial dependency and straining away from letting it take control of you.

2. I would say it is a balance of both improving technology and the skill of the workers because no matter what both will never be perfect. Man is flawed and accidents will happen regardless of skill, though workers of all fields should be trained up to par. There will be accidents with technology, but as it improves, it will show us a world we have never seen before, where technology will be far smarter and stronger than man.

3. This does tie into the concern of technology taking jobs because as it advances it will be able to be way more efficient than a group of people combined, for at a lower cost as well. I think the thought of a robot waiting tables or delivering packages is very daunting. It not only takes jobs away from people who need them but also the human social experience.

4. I don’t think it’s more so about alternatives to technology but more about balance. For example, in the medical field, there should be a focus on improving survival rates and having a large number of machines that can assist health professionals in cancer detection. Though these machines should always be controlled by humans and should never be completely trusted.

Bonus:  For the most part, I’d say I’m pretty reliant on technology. It is required for online schooling, socializing with friends, and entertainment, among other things. My alarm clock wakes me up every morning, and the first thing I do is check my phone. I try to limit my usage as much as possible, but it’s difficult when it’s the world I’m used to living in.

Machines & Learning

The article was long but interesting. in the past few decades, Technology is progressing and is beneficial for us. The doctors are able to determine the early stages of cancer through imaging, and lifespan is longer than 20 years ago. The author brings examples about airplane accidents and how pilots’ knowledge declines because they are dependent on automatic devices. He mentions that pilots should be trained and observed how will they react if airplanes will lose control.  I believe that technology can get out of control because it is automatic and it is obvious to have incidents.  technology has pros and cons. We get so comfortable with advanced technology majority of people are relying on the technology.  The main concern is to test people’s adequate knowledge because someone like a pilot should be prepared to be appropriate in action and professional in manual flying. Does Technology take jobs away? In many dimensions yes, I can see it in everyday life. unfortunately, not everyone is educated to work in high positions and advanced technology fetches jobs from the working class. I can see clearly that soon we will be in a contactless society.

how does it affect my life? technology has an important role in my life.  As an immigrant, My family lives abroad and because of technology, i am able to see and talk to them. I read on my phone. I listen to various teachers every day if i am not able to read. technology  played a tremendous role in my education past two years. I am able to access any information and scrutinize it because of technology. I am convinced that technology somehow made huge differences in many people’s lives and like mentioned before it has pros and cons.

Week 11: Machines & Learning

Nicholas Carr claims that our reliance on technology becomes stronger and stronger. I agree with Carr as we people of the information era. We develop our technologies for ease of lifestyle and reduce our skill ceiling to do tasks. We have come so far that it’s extremely hard to undo the change. We have to adapt to the aspect of doing less with technology is more while also being aware of what and how technology works. We have a bad habit of jumping to technology to every task we do even if it’s something we know we double check Google for reassurance. For us to fix the tragic state we are in we need to discipline ourselves and how we use technology instead of just thinking its best for

Improving technology helps with efficiency as it helps produce more results while the use of people is used for quality check. While generations ago artisans had to manually construct and refine their skills to produce a product and make sure it is up to the highest standards they can give. In order to improve obtaining skills we should follow similar to how black smiting, painting and looming was. These skill crafters only relied on themselves and the tools they made to help make their work easier was only used to advance the production of their crafts. But we have gone so drunk over technology making things easier we use technology for less work and more reward.

Technology will take over jobs as technology is more consistent than people. I believe in some aspects technology should take over such as assembly line building. But the industry would still need a skilled person to check and make sure the product is of quality. For the majority of technology it’s about ease of lifestyle and putting the stress on technology to complete our tasks. For me I am an advocate of technology but I also believe that it is the fault of the user how they allow the technology to invade their lives.  There are no true alternatives to technology affecting the work field and normal consumers. It just matters how it’s used and how much it is invading one’s life.

As a consumer of technology it is a majority part of my life and career. I like technology but I am working on not letting it take over my life. There are certain things that technology can’t do that needs personal touch to make things work.

Week 11 Discussion

  1. Carr addresses how as time progresses, our reliance on technology becomes stronger and stronger. For example, the tragic incidents of the plane crash mentioned in the article. I would moderately agree with Carr because it’s good that we have advanced technology that helps us solve a problem but It’s not safe to rely on technology always because it only can do repetitive work, and may cause technical issues. As technology is evolving we should also be gaining new skills and knowledge as well so technology can be relied on for certain convenience. The plane crash incidents show us how we should rely on technology by keeping the plan control automatic even so It shows how we also have the unique skills to adapt, innovate, and creativity. What could have fixed this incident is placing someone who is highly trained and someone who doesn’t lack situational awareness. The captain was good to react quickly but he should have not acted alone and should have had his co-pilot also help him.
  2. I think improving the skills of workers matters the most because humans are unique, we have characteristics, emotions and we have the ability to gain skills, technology does not have those unique aspects as we do. Since we have this ability it’s good to make use of it, the more we know the better we improve.
  3. This does relate to the concern of technology taking jobs because If technology were to take our jobs, how will we make money to pay for our rent, food, and other essentials? We would just be at home and feel bored, our lifestyle would completely change. It’s best to have technology used as an extra hand or as a helpful guide instead of giving them jobs when people who are looking for jobs need it to make a living.
  4. One approach I can think of is to take over jobs that do not allow technology to take over. Technology should be controlled by the hands of humans to take a small role.

Bonus: I would say I do rely on technology significantly because now I use it to join my classes, chat with friends, do my homework and watch entertainment such as movies, youtube, go on social media and use it to store my personal information. I use it for various things to keep me busy but to also help me learn a new skill or to learn to make a new dish, DIY, or just something I need help on.
